How did my teeth lose their beautiful whiteness?
Over time, your teeth can go from white to not-so-bright for a number of reasons.
Foods and Drink
Coffee, tea, red wine, and fried foods are the most common causes of tooth discoloring. Their intense color pigments attach to the white enamel of your teeth and alter the color.
Tobacco
The tar in tobacco is a naturally dark substance which leaves a stubborn stain. Nicotine is colorless until it mixes with oxygen which turns it into a yellowish surface stain.
Aging
The outer shell of your teeth is hard, white enamel. Below that layer is a softer yellowish layer called dentin. Over time, as brushing thins the outer enamel layer, more of the dentin shows through making the tooth look darker.
Trauma
If you’ve been hit in the general area of your mouth, your teeth react to the injury by laying down more dentin. Because the dentin layer is darker than the enamel, your teeth may change color.
Medical Therapy
Tooth darkening can be a side effect of antihistamines, antipsychotics, and high blood pressure medicines. Young children who are exposed to the antibiotics tetracycline and doxycycline when their teeth are forming (either in the womb or as an infant) often have yellow to dark brown discoloration of their adult teeth later in life. Chemotherapy and radiation to the head and neck can also darken teeth.
